Primarily I would say it was for cosmetic reasons, the bags on the white portions are literally clean and white, whereas the original ones are tobacco stained (this is because the portions are wetted whilst in the bag during manufacture, as opposed to the white which are wetted before being bagged)

However, some affectionados say they prefer the original 'stained' bags, as the flavour appears more readily than the white version! Wink

...plus I find that the brown bags tend to get runny a little sooner than white bags (or run more).
But that's just a guess...for example:
Rocker red - brown bags - runny like hell.
Rocker Blue and Silver - brown bags - run very little and only after an hour or so.

Here is the text (edited for content) that comes in a little book that comes with the Swedish Match Snus Range (a try-out box of 8 different Snus Cans):

Original Portion Maxi
… The pouches are dark and moist, delivering a powerful tobacco experience. …

Original Portion Large
… dark in colour and moist. Flavour and aroma are full-bodied and almost identical to the traditional loose format. (sic: Loose Snus users who need to use pouches at times would prefer the Original Portions, Generally Maxi.)

Original Portion Mini
The mini-portion pouch was first introduced in 1984, due to consumer demands for a smaller and more discreet portion pouch. Original Portion Mini is dark and moist, with the same characteristic flavour and aroma as its larger relative.

White Portion Large
A new portion format introduced in 2003. The portions are manufactured with a different technique than for the Original Portion, requiring no after-moisturizing. As a result, the portion packets have a white surface, a slightly milder aroma and a longer-lasting taste.

White Portion Mini
A smaller, very discreet version of (the) White Portion. The portions have a white, slightly drier surface. Aroma and flavour characteristics are usually quite mild.

End Of Quote from Swedish Match's "Discover eight Swedish snus classics", pages 6-7 {English Side}.

I see the difference between them (the portion bags) is that the White Portions sustain the flavor releasing it slower, thus, the flavor itself lasts longer. It would depend on whether you want your flavor to come out quickly (like a rush), or more slowly - some people like both at different times (e.g. a dark portion early in the morning and one before bedtime, or vice-versa). Thus, The dark portions should be slightly stronger.

For those of you wanting to experiment, I would buy at least one of the White, and at least one of the Original (which is the dark bag) of a same brand, to see which one, or ones you like. Of course, not all brands offer all formats.
